The starts this Saturday July 21,2012.  It’s a non stop 300 nautical mile circumnavigation of Lake Ontario.  The racing starts at 1030 in Port Credit and heads east to Main Duck Island.  After skirting around it’s shoals we… head south to Oswego’s Ford Shoal and then make the treck west to the Niagara river’s R2.  Then the final leg runs north back to where it all started in Port Credit.  I’ll be racing on Phoenix, a J109.  Sheila has put together a fantastic crew and we’re out to kick some butt!  The weather forecast on the other hand has decided to make us work for it. Lake Ontario is being bombarded with a series of high pressure systems.  That means light air, but it also means high humidity and the potential for very fast very isolated thunder storms to pop up.  We’ll have to pay close attention to the weather while we’re working hard to keep ahead!  Follow us on the .

Although this wasn’t a UK Halsey sail, it will be a great UK Halsey repair.  This main came with the boat when it was purchased, and has definitely seen many many miles.  The guys at the loft will work their magic and it will live to see another day until it can be replaced.

Yikes!

We had a great first race today.  The boat was moving well and we had all but one of our target boats where we wanted them.  With our math we figured we were tied overall for first place with very little margin on second place and third.  The second race started up in a building breeze with a forecast for a thunderstorm.  We had a FANTASTIC start, on the line with speed and height on our competition and then BOOM!  The main started flogging and the boat started to slow down.  The laminate in the main sail, just below the headboard, blew wide open.  Our racing for the day was over.  It’s like they say…..”stuff happens”.  We talked briefly about jury rigging the system to get the main put back together, but the final decision was to save the sail and call it a day.  Right now it’s an easy fix for the loft.  If it had blown out even more, it would have been a horrendous repair.  We’ll get them next time!

We’re all ready!  The mast is tuned, the gear is set and the crew are pacing!  It will be a two day regatta at the PCYC Open, and the crew on Xoomer Xpress are itching to get going!  It’s going to be light wind and probably very very shifty, depending on how close our race course is to the shoreline, but with a general “go left trend”.  Tomorrow should be a little breezier!…..Hopefully!

The mission….PCYC Open Regatta…… The competition………….IRC division 1

What am I talking about????? This weekend’s big racing event is the PCYC Open Regatta.  I’ll be racing on Xoomer Xpress, the X-35.  We’ve got our targets in sight, including my good buddy Andrew Leslie who will be racing on Game Changer.  Andrew and I may have a mission next year to conquer the Fastnet Race together on the Mini, but this weekend we’ll be on opposite sides of the bow, pushing our boats as hard as we can around the race course.  It’s going to be light wind, so tricky tricky sailing to keep the boats moving at optimal performance!  Stay posted for the interim results after Saturday’s racing 🙂

So with the Volvo Ocean Race over, I’m suffering from racing withdrawal!  Here’s a great movie to help you fill the void while you’re waiting for the Vendee Globe to start in November. When you buy the movie, the proceeds directly support sailors in Canada!
